A dedication to Ray Eames. Ray was a designer that was overshadowed by her husband Charles Eames. Never getting the credit she fully deserved. This chair is a representation of her. Taking organic shapes inspired by Ray’s earlier paintings. Putting the organic, rounded shapes at the forefront of the design to portray the presence of Ray’s touch. The sitting spot then lies within the shape as if the chair lying within Ray’s design. The chair is fully made of metal and with heat and pressure was forced into its form. Learning the craft of metalwork within the chair-making process using different techniques and tools to get the final well-made, rounded outcome I wanted. I am proud to say I am the designer and maker of this well-crafted chair.
Learning Development
Development Objects
Learning and developing the craft of metal work. Starting with welding, learning how to alter your technique to the different angle of the weld. Using this skill to create a mini table. Moving onto moulding metal, using your own strength the encourage the metal into new forms using different moulds. This technic was used to create a bowl. We then carried on to reshaping and twisting using heat and a hammer. This was used to form a hook.
Making Process of Final Chair
Metal Bending: Bending metal is challenging. We started with cold bending, using significant pressure. Working with a large piece in a small space required problem-solving, often resolved by flipping or heating the metal. Heat posed risks as the hollow tube could collapse. Symmetry: To maintain symmetry, we frequently compared the metal to the drawn shape on the floor. Blow Torch: A blow torch was used to bend and connect metal rods, ensuring equal spacing and correct angles. Welding: Strong welds secured the chair's form. Grinding: We smoothed out bumps for a polished look. Spray Paint: The chair was finished with black car spray paint.
